One of the greatest things about art is its ability to inspire. From inspiring peoples’ actions and minds to inspiring other artists, the impact art can have on an individual is nothing short of phenomenal.  As we speak of tattoos, we could surely say that they too can be inspiring, but usually the question is “what inspired that tattoo?”

With that being said, I’ve noticed a huge increase in movie-related tattoos lately, and realized that  it’s actually quite inspiring in its own special way.  Film in general is definitely its own unique form of art, as is tattoo. However, it’s the combination of the two and how they can relate that’s truly amazing.  They are both art, yet both completely different in style and medium.  For a person to choose a movie character or screenshot and tattoo it on their body is essentially a continuation of the original art; the movie.  But – Not only is it a continuation of the movie, it’s now represented as a new art form, the tattoo.  At this point, the tattoo itself may have a deeper and more intimate meaning than the movie, especially if it’s relevant to the feelings, attitude, or life events of the person who bares it.

In all reality, tattoos usually hold special meaning regardless of their content. But when one form of totally unrelated art inspires another, it gives them both a stronger, more powerful meaning than ever before – not only to the person wearing  the tattoo, but to anyone who can appreciate and understand where their inspiration came from.

I got to do a really great portrait of Christian Bale from American Psycho a couple months back. It’s posted on my site in the “tattoos” section. Check it out.
