Visible tattoos are often frowned upon in the fashion world. Here are top four areas of the body that high fashion models will often sport their bold body ink, inconspicuously.
There are many rules to modeling in high fashion internationally. No over-eating. Taking care of your skin. Working out. Staying overall healthy. Learning languages. Being on time to a gig. Sucking it up in every situation, rain, shine, snow, sleet. And of course, not having too many tattoos or even one or two that may be too obvious (yes, that means the one that you got when you finally turned 18…you know…the pair of cherries with your name on the top, directly next to your belly-button. Yeah. That one.)But even models like to express themselves, live a little, and give in to that urge to get at least one tatt. So they get a little crafty with it. If you look closely as they trot up and down the runway, you may notice “inkage” in 1 of these 4 places : 1) the wrist 2) the foot/ankle region 3) behind the ear, and 4) the back of the neck. There are the occasional neck and inner arm tatts as well, but they don’t outnumber the “peekers”, as I like to call them, on the top four areas list.
Whether it be an Model agency/management , renowned photographer, designer, it is custom to frown upon the obvious sight of tattoos. They all prefer them as a backdrop or part of the cloth’s design, but not actual “markings”on the skin. This is one of the things that can keep a model from being booked by big clients. Even in this day and age, tattoos are still largely taboo in the industry. Lucky for us and our readers, there are many clothing lines and brands becoming more accepting of tatts, and body art in general. Lets hope, now in 2010, this will continue to grow as a more adoptable trend.
